If you want a beach wedding that feels relaxed and easy, and you want your family to actually be able to get there without a hike, A-Bay in Waikoloa is hard to beat. It is one of the most laid-back spots on the Big Island, and it works beautifully for a small, intimate ceremony.
I filmed and photographed Erika and Matt’s elopement here, and it reminded me why I keep sending couples this way. You can see more of my work on my Big Island elopement photography page. This guide walks you through what makes A-Bay such a good fit for an intimate beach wedding, from the easy access to the sunsets to where you can grab dinner after.
Anaehoʻomalu Bay, or A-Bay as everyone here calls it, sits right in the Waikoloa Beach Resort area. It has soft sand, swaying palms, and a calm, wide-open feel that photographs beautifully.
Behind the beach there is a reflective fishpond that catches the light in the evening. It gives the whole spot a quiet, mirror-like backdrop that you do not get at most beaches. For a simple ceremony, it is the kind of setting that does the work for you.
This is the part I always point out first. A-Bay is one of the easiest beaches to actually reach on the Big Island. Parking is close, the path to the sand is short and flat, and there is no scrambling over lava rock to get down there.
If you have older guests or little kids in your group, that matters more than people realize. Everyone can get to the ceremony spot without stress, and that keeps the whole day calm. Erika and Matt had family of all ages there, and nobody had to be left behind or helped over rough ground.
A-Bay faces west, so it is one of the better sunset beaches on this side of the island. Time your ceremony or your portraits for the hour before sunset, and the light here goes soft and warm and makes everything look better.
One honest note. This is a popular beach, so you will have other people around, especially in the evening. It does not take away from the setting, but if you want that quiet, just-us feeling, plan your ceremony for late afternoon and let the crowd thin as the sun drops.
One of my favorite things about A-Bay is that you are not far from anywhere. Lava Lava Beach Club sits right on the sand, so you can walk straight from your ceremony to dinner with your toes still in it.
If you want more options, the Kings’ Shops and Queens’ MarketPlace are a short drive away with plenty of restaurants to choose from. For a small elopement, it makes the after-party simple. No long drive, no big plan, just good food close by.
A-Bay is my pick for couples who want:
If you are dreaming of something private and secluded with nobody else around, there are quieter beaches I can point you toward. But for an easy, family-friendly beach wedding that still looks beautiful, A-Bay is tough to beat.
